Transformers 2 was like...

Sun Jun 28, 2009, 1:13 PM
watching someone make fun of themselves and not realize it. Eventually it gets to a point where it's no longer funny. It's like this scene from the office;

[link] The difference is of course Ricky Gervais did that on purpose. Transformers 2 felt like it wanted to be something more but never got to that point in development. "just put a few shots of Megan Fox's boobs bouncing up and down in slow motion, throw in a couple Imax shots and call it day!"

Marketing I guess started after The Dark Knight where everyone thought the key to success was to make a movie two and a half hours long, tell people it was a darker story, and had better effects. Unfortunately they missed the part where they needed to have a story to tell, engaging characters, and all the stuff that made TDK so good. This was pretty much Michael Bay going "How much crap can I blow up before people realize they got punk'd?" The answer? 12 Minutes. I wanted to love, or at least enjoy the film and Bay couldn't do that. I wasn't sure the original would be any good, but I was surprised and I was pumped for the sequel.

If you liked it, that's cool. I wish I could say I enjoyed it. Unfortunately it was boring, there was no story, and I couldn't stand Sam's college roomate. Now I understand why Jonah Hill turned that role down. He knew it sucked.

Also, more than half of the new bots never get proper introductions. The original four autobots are there, but other than Optimus (Who gets the absolute best parts of the movie) they were just background. The new ones didn't do anything worth mentioning. Except those twins, which loved telling people that they'd bust a cap in people's asses. There's some question as to whether they're racist and it's warranted. But I went to a theater that was predominantly a black audience and eveyrone else laughed while I groaned. It's not that I'm more sensitive to this or anything (far from it), but I know someone's lame attempt at getting a laugh and that's what they were.

I don't buy my displeasure comes from not being a fan of the series. I just think it was so painfully obvious that the film had no purpose. One of the major plot points gets brought in close to the end of the movie and gets resolved fairly quick. I think there were cliff notes of a story that they used, and had they spent time actually writing something awesome, the movie would have probably been a tight two hour action fest that was actually fun. How could you make fighting robots boring?

Again, if you did enjoy it, great! In fact I'd like to know why you enjoyed it.
